So I'm looking through some SSD listings over on Newegg, and I come across this:
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?reviews=all&Item=9SIA8S18R33054
It's an Eluktro Pro-X 2TB M.2 SSD.
Eluktronics, of course, is not a manufacturer. You can find SSDs on their website, up to 1TB in capacity, such as this one:
https://www.eluktronics.com/PRO-X-1TB-G2
As they explain on their website, "Eluktronics is proud to offer an extreme performance oriented solid state drive produced by SamsungĀ®. We title these drives the "Eluktro Pro-X"."
And indeed, this was revealed elsewhere, as others have deduced that Eluktronics was selling Samsung SM951 SSDs:
http://www.thessdreview.com/daily-n...ro-x-performance-a-samsung-sm951-in-disguise/
So mystery solved, right?
Except the SM951 was never sold in 1TB or 2TB capacities.
So the 1TB and 2TB Eluktro Pro-X units are very likely Samsungs of some variety, but which ones? Eluktronics doesn't even list the 2TB version on their website.
It might not seem like a huge deal - these are probably great drives no matter what they are - but if they're an outdated model, there are better options. And if they're 970 Evo Plusses, they're a steal!
-
I can't help with solving the mystery, but I'm very interested in hearing the results since I'm planning to order one of these laptops within the next month.
Hopefully someone can shed light on the mystery of the 1TB and 2TB options! -
Correction: I was thinking about their sata drives at the time. They sell polaris samsung nvme's for about the same capacity, so I really have no idea why they are doing this, unless the drives are purely just using samsung controllers and remade by avant. Their newer NVME's use SMI controllers and are the ones made by avant. I assume rebranding samsung drives didnt go well before, but doing it with avant did.
Their Sata's and perhaps nvme are made by Avant http://www.avanttechnology.com/index.php/products/solid-state-drives - source is me asking them.
I would be careful about buying the 2tb nvme drives, they are Disproportionately priced compared to the 1 terabyte variants. What's interesting is that they have a single-sided 2 terabyte nvme for $1,000 from toshiba, but if you can do that, why not have a 4 terabyte nvme? They dont like to talk about it, and it became a serious point of contention with me and their promoters awhile back.Last edited: Mar 1, 2019
