well, i've seen a lot of complain on review site about having 17" notebook that doesn't have a numpad and said that it is a "waste of space". Although numpad seen as a plus in notebook, i think that everyone should know or realise that having a numpad is not necessarily be good. when a 17" notebook has a numpad it usually have a keyboard that flex and the keyboard is put off centre, the latter is a big no no for me. i wish that review site (namely cnet) would stop complaining about the lack of numpad on 17" notebook. i think that the manufacturer knows the downside of putting a numpad, so some of the 17" notebook on sale dont have a numpad. and that is why i prefer notebook that don't have a numpad. besides, you can seperatly buy a seperate keyboard, i think that is the best option (of course i do realise the added inconvinience added with that, buy i think that it is the best solution). what do you think?

well I think I don't care

I want a numpad. I don't like little numpad attachments hanging off the side of my laptop.

sorry i forgot to mention my intent on writing this thread; i wish that review site (namely cnet) would stop complaining about the lack of numpad on 17" notebook. i think that the manufacturer knows the downside of putting a numpad, so some of the 17" notebook on sale dont have a numpad.

Just get a wireless keyboard.

You see, getting a wireless keyboard gives me yet another thing to carry around. And I won't be able to use the computer on my lap.

I work with numbers all day and prefer having the big screen and the numerical keypad in one punch. Also, most of the 17's seem to be geared towards desktop replacements anyhow, so ultimately the benefits of desktops (extended keyboard) will be used as a judging standard for laptops.
Maybe I'm thinking like cNet in that I really don't care about keyboard flex. -
keyboard flex is very easy and very inexpensive to fix

All of Acer's and HP's 17" notebooks have numpads. Dell's do not.
-
I couldn't care less about the lack of a numpad. I hate typing on a keyboard shifted to the left, it's uncomfortable to me.
-
I think part of the reason is that qwerty part of the keyboard would have to be shifted to the left side (rather than central) of the laptop which means when typing you're not directly facing the middle of the screen. This some may find odd or annoying... On desktops the keyboards are flexible...
There are some with numpads but not many. -

Numpads are very useful - I wouldn't buy a 17" notebook without one. Dell probably doesn't include one on their 17" models because it's cheaper not to. Waste of space. I use a desktop keyboard with my laptop for the numpad. The USB ones don't cut it for me.
The notebooks I have used with numpads had no notable flex, that's a myth. There's usually some sort of seperator between the regular keyboard and the numpad.
Why 17" notebook don't have a numpad
