    I don't understand it.

Most everybody is asking for non-glossy screens it seems, yet they keep pouring out. Not only that, viewing angles, and contrast all seems to have gotten much more worse than they used to. Is LED a curse?

It's disheartening seeing that so many Laptops have poor displays. It's like it's last priority to many of the companies. Only a few, like Sony, Apple and some high end Dell/HP seems to have "good" displays.

Think about it - The ultimate paradox is having a laptop that is not useable in many light conditions, + almost any outdoor use. Reflections, poor black levels, bad contrasts... The display is the users contact with the device. In a sense it's one of the most important input methods in the machine, and I think it gets down rated soo often due to poor design.

I understand LED's are supposed to be brighter, and they use significantly less energy, but the cost of it in many cases is horrible.

I completely agree. Can't wait for OLED to become mainstream.

The reason displays are bad is because most consumers have no idea what a good display is. So there is no reason to have anything better on the market except in higher end things where the typical consumer there would know a bit better what they are looking for

Totally agree - I want a 16:10 screen with a 1680x1050 (15" screen) and 1920x1200 (17" screen) but so many of them are 16:9 and low resolution. And glossy... it sucks.

This is completely independent of resolution and backlighting. The fact that these newer displays are led backlit as opposed to ccfl is an improvement. What's getting steadily worse is the quality of the actual panels.

You're confusing two different technologies. One is the backlight, the other is the panel. Almost all notebooks use poor quality 6-bit TN panels. A LED backlight won't change the viewing angles of a bad panel, but it will make it brighter and last longer than a CCFL backlight.
