Why can't I remove the optical drive and is a secondary modular bay battery worth it?

I have a Dell Latitude D520. I have recently decided to upgrade ole Betsy instead of replacing her-don't fix it if it ain't broken, but you might want to give it a paint job. One option I'm looking at is replacing the optical drive with a battery to extend battery life (I never use the former, and an extra couple hours of battery life would be the sweetest). But I can't get the stinking optical drive out of the media bay. What's the dealio?? I've followed all the steps, and when it comes time for it to slide out, nothing happens. Is the performance of a secondary battery the same as the performance of the primary (holding specs constant)?
