Ok today I left my laptop on to do a virus scan while I was out. When I got back it was on sleep mode and it locked me out so I had to log back in. The virus scan was no where to be seen and now the text on by screen seems really blurry. What happened? How can I fix this?

Maybe it crashed somehow and restarted in safe mode? Or the resolution changed itself for whatever reason.

Can you try increasing the resolution to the display's default?

Please do not bump your thread more than once every 24 hours, it is poor "netiquette" and against forum rules.

Ensure that your resolution is at the native resolution setting, and that your screen refresh rate, DPI, and color depth are all unchanged. Check your ClearType settings (I don't see how that could've gotten changed, but I guess it doesn't hurt to check) and make sure ClearType is enabled and set to your preferred settings.

Umm, where do I check my clear type setting? My native resolution is 1920 x 1080. But I have always had it 1280 x 720.

    That's part of your problem.....

Instead of running your screen at full native resolution and learning how to manage the display sizes/dpi of the OS and your apps you 'cheated' and have been running the screen at a reduced interpolated resolution.

Cleartype is managed in the control panel via the fonts applet.

How is that cheating? I just like the way 1280x720 looks and my games run better on it.

If you like the way it looks then, well.

But running an LCD panel at less than it's native resolution introduces distortions in both resolution and color rendition.

Just run the the games at that resolution through their settings, that way you get back to native when you quit. That way you won't have any problems with cleartype screwing over either since the pixels aren't where it thinks they are.

"Fine" is probably what you're used to at this point which actually might be very off from what the display should have looked like in the first place.

    Try posting a screenshot.

As far as what happened I'd bet that something in the sleep/wakeup sequence triggered your graphics adapter to revert to best available (default/native) resolution.

Look at it this way; unintentionally you might have stumbled onto an eventual how-to that ends up actually setting up your machine to run at best advantage.

Yep, you'll want to run at native resolution. On modern LCD monitors, you always want to run at native resolution if at all possible, otherwise you get all sorts of strange behavior, distortions, and text blurriness. Change your resolution back to 1920x1080, set your DPI higher to increase text size if you have difficulty reading it. To access those settings, paste the following in a Windows Explorer window:
    Code:
    Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Display
Then, in the left hand column, click on "Adjust Cleartype text" and follow the instructions.

Yes, desktop for native resolution. For gaming whatever resolution works for you for performance reasons or otherwise. Two different ballgames. :D

But could going to such a high resolution slow down my computer? I have a 9600m GT by the way

Nothing will slow down while using Windows desktop. In game, higher resolutions affect performance, but that's because it's rendering 3D in real-time. You can run your game at a different resolution than you keep your Windows desktop. They don't need to be the same. Heck an old GeForce 4200 or Intel GMA 950 integrated graphics can run 1920x1080 Windows desktop no problem.
