    Why does the 8250U require such a high voltage?

    Most CPUs will crash if you go below 600 mV - it's simply because of the silicon. The problem with the 7700HQ and i5 8250U is that they are based on the same architecture which has to scale from 130W+ to as low as 300 mW. Intel has done a remarkable job here, but an architecture designed from the ground up for power efficiency like Goldmont Plus (low price & performance) will perform a lot better in terms of battery life.

    Umm, at this point I think you guys are chasing your tails a bit. 0.3W to 0.5W is quite acceptable. Tame your background processes, tasks, auto starts, etc. You are getting C7+ already.

    I can confirm that, on idle clocks, the 8550U runs at about -200mV lower than the 8250U. The 8550U idles at ~0.65v whereas the 8250U does ~0.83v on stock settings.

    Thanks for that observation, if every thing else is equal that may be a sign that those CPU's don't need as hot a CPU voltage for the full range of samples being seen, so the BIOS has reduced the voltage.
