I recently ordered a dell vostro 1400 (still in transit), and I've heard its 'luck of the draw' in terms of whether or not the LCD is acceptable or not.
All discussion about the acceptability of one screen over another aside, why is it that only certain screens can be used in certain laptops? Why couldn't I decide to buy a screen sold as a replacement for a sony 14" computer and stick it in a dell machine? Isn't a display a display? Is it a matter of BIOS recognizing a product number or something? Just curious. . .

I think it might be how it fits into the laptop's display lid. It's not like there's a standard to how they fit.
Why doesn't any LCD work?
