I see all these great prices and sales on DDR2 ram, but rarely on DDR. Does anybody know why? There seems to be a decent price difference between the two.![]()

Any ideas?

Less demand for DDR, more demand for DDR2?
-
Two ideas come to my mind:
1. The sheer volume of DDR2 chips being produced is *much* higher than the old DDR1, driving prices down and up, respectively.
2. DDR2 is cheaper to produce
Or both, neither, or a combination of somewhat truths -
Just as Liquid Steel said. DDR is old enough that supply is becoming scarce. DDR2 is easier to produce, especially at larger sizes.
This is why I don't buy more RDRam for my old desktop, it's 8 year old tech and costs almost half a thousand dollars! -
Yeap, they don't produce it as much and in large quantities anymore, so they are pretty scarce. Put that with supply and demand, and well, it's what it is today.
-
Yep, they're phasing out production on the old DDR pretty quickly, look for it to jump in price even more now that DDR3 is out and they shut down production completely.

Not just the older RAM is like that.
When I was looking at 1gb sticks of 533mhz RAM for my notebook, I found that the newer 667mhz RAM was cheaper to buy, so I bought that instead(It clocked itself back to 533 and ran fine).
Why is DDR so much more expensive than DDR2?
