Why is the IRST Driver better even when not setting up a RAID array?

I always wondered, how come every computer I see, even though it doesn't have a RAID Array, you find the manufacturer has already installed some version of the IRST driver? Is the IRST Controller better than the default MSAHCI one?

How can that be when you're not even using RAID?

Different AHCI algorithms, different internal data flows etc etc. Basically a different implementation of the same thing. MSAHCI prioritizes maximum stability and compatibility, IRST is more performance tuned.

Generally, IRST is slightly superior when it comes to Sequential performance and high queue depth performance. MSAHCI has lower power consumption.

My take is that MSAHCI stopped developing in circa 2006... while Intel RST keeps improving (in real world workloads, not just benchmark 'scores').
