I am looking to buy a new notebook for my fiance. I am having an issue because all the notebooks I've looked at put the intake fan on the bottom (Dell, toshiba, hp, compaq). Why do all the mantufactors do this, don't they understand it will overheat when people are using it? It's a lap-top computer!!! I have a gateway 450 I bought a couple of years a go. One of the main things I like about it is the intake and outake for the fan is located on the side. Anybody know of a good notebook that doesn't overheat on your lap? I hate using the stupid notebook cooler pad.

Because there aren't many other places to put it. The laptop's size is limited, so fans need to be put somewhere. Putting vents on the side restricts the air flow alot, because it doesn't make a complete ventulation system, but a forced one.

The term laptop is quite deceiving isn't it? :p

That's part of why everyone is using the term "notebook" now.

Yeah, almost all laptops have either an exhaust or intake on the bottom, simply because there's nowhere else to put the fan. Still, it's much better to have an intake rather than an exhaust on the bottom; my KN1 sucks in air from the bottom, and the intake area is actually much cooler than the rest of the bottom panel. There's still a good deal of heat from the graphics card and processor areas, but I've used my system on my lap quite a bit, and the heat isn't too bothersome.

The fan on the side increases the depth of the laptop. These days are laptops are becoming thinner and thinner so the fans are placed in the bottom. Also placing the fan sideways means that in some cases there might be a need to put 2 or more fans since the fans tend to be smaller. If the intake is on the bottom only 1 large fan might be able to take care of the cooling.

Mine gets **** hot on the bottom and has two fans in the back which to me seems the best place to put them. Mine burns my legs if its hot. I blame the P4 thats in it that and the hard drive-both run hot as hell.

Anyway it freaks me out a bit to having the fans on the bottom (or the side) but if it works and isn't uncomfortable then no biggie.

On newer, portable laptops, I can't seem to think where else they could put the fans, after all, they need to take heat away from the components inside, and that's exactly what the fans underneath and effeciently doing. On my inspiron 8100, the fans are on the back side of the laptop, but my notebook is quite bulky and heavy.

Agreed I don't even use the term laptop no more. I have a P4/HT ASUS Z81sp (9 pound 15.4" beast) that's vented through the bottom as well as 3 sides of the case as well and since it's a 9 pound notebook, it's home is on my desk or in the pull behind hard case when I need to take it with me.

A notebook being that's vented though the bottom is no big deal for me since when I owned my old HP notebook that was not vented thought the bottom, I never used it on my lap becasue I have seen way too many accidents with a notebook that's been on somone's lap.

The only notebooks that I have seen these days that are vented through the bottom, are ones that have desktop chips in them such as P4's or AMD 64's or high end gammers notebooks that have 7800GTX's in them since they need the extra cooling.

There are plenty of notebooks out there that are not vented at the bottom and you will have to mostly stick to the smaller form factors such as 14" or smaller. There are larger notbooks that are not vented thorugh the bottom but they can get very hot on your lap.
