I'm planning to buy myself a notebook for editing websites, photoshopping and the use of standard desktop applications (MS Office, Internet). Ocasionally I would like to play a game on this laptop too. This will be older games like Emperor: Battle for Dune and Warcraft 3.

I saw 2 Asus laptops (both 1GB memory and 5400rpm HD) with different CPU en GPU combination.

wich one is the better option for the tasks I would like to do.

Intel Pentium M 745 with Nvidia Geforce Go 7300 or
AMD Turion X2 TL50 with Nvidia Geforce Go 6100.

I also saw an Asus with the Turion replaced with a Sempron 3400+. Are Sempron processors an option for the above mentioned tasks? It will save me about €100,-

The sempron processor should run older games just fine. I would go with the Go 7300, it is slightly better than the 6100. I believe that both of the cards will run games. Be aware that the x2 is a dual core and 64 bit while the P-M is not. It probably will not affect your decision because you will not need any of those functions. The 6100 is also offered as an integrated card, so just know that it might steal some system RAM. The 1 GB of memory will help.

    Cheers

Pentium M 745 is an older generation processor. Eventhough Go 7300 is a better card, I would choose the Turion X2 with the integrated Nvidia chip because it will surely run Vista and be more future proof.

By the way, there are other brands, which will offer you a cheaper notebook for your purposes. You will sacrify some sturdiness but gain $$$ and features. Maybe you can have a look at HP or Acer...in any case filling out the FAQ in the "What should I buy" forum will help you.

    Thanks for your replies.

I've looked into a lot of laptops. Asus seems to be the right choice here in the netherlands. It seems to have a more decent build quality than Acer and offers a standard two year warranty (pick up and return) where Acer and HP come with a one year pick up and return warranty.

Wich type of Acer and HP do you recomend to me? I'm still open for alternatives on the Asus!

Intel Pentium M is good cpu as battery, heat, performance and it has no problems with Vista
7300 is Ok for what you're gonna use it.
you definitely don't need Turion for your purposes

Battery shouldn't be a problem as I mostly will use is plugged in. The notebook would function as a little desktop replacement.

Is it a good idea to buy a laptop with an 'older' cpu technology. I don't think i'm going to use vista on the laptop. Tested it on my desktop, but it was really resource hungry.

it is really not logical to use a laptop as a desktop replacement

you can get a much better performing desktop then a laptop at the same price

if you're not going to move your comp, you should really reconsider your decision to move to laptop

well well well What can I say some people...

Of couse notebook as a Desktop Replacement has so many advantages then the typical desktop. (size, noise, heat, cables...).

Pentium M is not so old technology but nowadays you can find Core Duo at the same price. So yes it's not a good idea.

i'm saying it's cheaper to either upgrade a desktop/buy a new desktop with better performance then a laptop for the same price

power efficient cpus like centrinos do not generate much heat and it is less noticible then a laptop on your lap

there are many mini tower desktops and a lcd does not take up much space

there are fans in laptops too. desktop fans are genenerally more quiet as they can use bigger 80mm fans while laptops can't use such a big fan thus they have to spin at higher rpm thus it gets noiser. in many cases the HD is the noisest component and i know since i have two WD 10000rpm raptors running raid that are very noisy.

cables can be organized and should not be the deciding factor of whether one should get a laptop

also, another reason i recommend stylance to get a desktop is because he is using it as a desktop replacement. if he doesn't plan to move around with his computer, then a desktop would offer much better performace for the same price

well, I also use one as a desktop replacement, and I'm thinking of getting rid of my desktop. It's subjective.

other issues (size, heat, cable, noise) depends on you. Both have pros and cons the question is to make good choice

I think hi is here because he is looking for notebook, and he know more then you and me why!

    Hello Everybody,

Thanks for all replies. They helped me alot. I've bought the Asus a6m-q037 with the AMD Turion X2 TL50.

As faar as I can tell now, the performance of this notebook is very good.

As stated above; a laptop as a desktop replacement has some advantages:

    - Need less space
    - It's portable, you can use it almost anywhere

Ans actualy it is not a replacement for my desktop. Its used like an extra desktop since my wife started using the desktop more and more last months...
