Hi I am going to buy an alienware area 51m-9750 notebook but I dont knnow wich resolution is better for gaming the full hd 1920 or the 1440. Screen is sharpest in the native resolution but the full gd resolution with max setting is a quite lot for a notebook even for an so powerful like the new alienware. So my question is wich screen is better to buy for the better gaming experience???? We are speeking about a 17 inch screen

Depends on what you want. If you want to play in native resolution get 1440X900 better chance of having all the eye candy on with the highest frame rate and you gamers love fps. But many don't care about native resolution they say it interlopes/scales just fine. The higher the resolution the better it should scale down in general. Non gaming apps the higher the res the better unless you have vision issues.

The graphics card(s) in the alienware should be able to handle almost any game on the 1920x1200 screen with lots of details. On the 1440x900 it definitely can. With the same size screen for both resolutions, the 1920x1200 is going to look significantly better. Because the resolution is greater you also have less need for AA, as there are more pixels around to make the transition. (maybe only 2xAA instead of 4xAA). The gaming experience is definitely going to be better on the larger of the two resolutions, and with alienware having said (I believe so, but don't hang me up on it) that they would make the 8800's available as an upgrade in the future I would not hesistate to pick the 1920x1200

    :D

(Edit: Well, I have to agree...if you love max FPS then go for the smaller of the two)

1440x900 is way too low for 17 inch

    get 1680x1050

    perfect balance imo

at 1920x1200, there are games which will lag even with sli 7950gtx like NWN2

I say if you are not going to use native resolution for gaming get the highest resolution you can handle with other apps.

    Which graphics card?

1440*900 for an 8600GT level card, maybe 1680*1050 for something more powerful. I'd say 1920*1200 is the realm of 8800 cards and desktop gaming for now.

Do you have an opinion on how this will be in a year or two, is that enough headroom?

don't know if it can upgrade to 8800

    and

higher resolution generally means LOWER performance on games though the game LOOKS better
