I have an MSI PR200 laptop and several months ago I swapped the Intel 3945 wifi card in it with a Broadcom BCM4311. A few weeks ago the display began to show a flat gray color upon turning on the computer, so I sent the laptop to the repair shop. When it came back, along with a new inverter board and cable, the Broadcom card was replaced with another 3945, and a label saying "not used in MSI" was attached to the Broadcom card.

My questions is, could an "incompatible" wifi card harm the other components in a laptop?

No, it shouldn't, unless yours is defective and could possibly short something out, but that could be any component.
