Will 1GB GPU suffice for play/edit/burn DVDs/upload full HD 1080p videos?

I need help in deciding between these 2 video cards:

    NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 550M 1GB graphics with Optimus
    NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 555M 3GB graphics with Optimus

I would like to know if the 550M 1GB GPU will be enough for me to be able to play/edit/burn DVDs/upload full HD 1080p videos coming from the new GoPro Hero2 and the new Panasonic HDC-TM900 video cameras. I've read somewhere that GPUs need to be powerful enough to utilize more than 1 GB. Also, I read that the 555M 3GB is only a marketing ploy for those who think that higher specs will make a difference, but in truth the 555M is not powerful enough to utilize the 3GB. Are those statements true? Would I be fine with just the 550M 1GB GPU for the tasks I'm asking with the specific video cameras I mentioned?

    Thanks in advance.

yes...when people talk about graphics card specs(including RAM), they're usually talking about gaming. Playing videos is not hard for a computer in the slightest - its like asking usane bolt to breathe.

I'm actually pretty sure that every single modern integrated GPU/CPU, except Atom, can play 1080p video no problem.

If you only plan on watching DVD's and stuff then a dedicated card would be mostly wasted. You may as well save the money and possibly battery life by just going with integrated graphics.

All you need, for what you've listed, is any integrated card currently on the market. The 550/555M are both going to be fine doing things like that (really playing 1080p is really the only thing it would assist which even the integrated does fine) as well.

At this point I think you should be deciding on a laptop based on other features; you should be fine with just about any GPU on the market.

Probably fairer to say most applications will not use anywhere near that amount of video memory, at least for now.

As for the GPU handling large amounts of memory here is a 3D application using ~1.8GB of video memory with frame rate capped to 60fps. The 540m can run this at it's low end clocks without any difficulty while still achieving the full 60fps.

There are many different types of GT555M.

    GF116
    GF106
    GF108

The 192bit GPU will have either 768/1536/3072 MB of VRAM.
The 128bit GPU will have either 512/1024/2048 MB of VRAM.

Which GPU and amount of memory depends on the implementation by the manufacturer.

    Yes, 3GB GT555M does exist.

    Yes there are even more

    144 cores 709MHz (GF106), 128Bit GDDR5, e.g. MSI GX780
    144 cores 590MHz (GF106), 192Bit DDR3, e.g. Dell XPS 17, Alienware M14x
    144 cores 590MHz (GF106), 128Bit DDR3, e.g. Schenker XMG A501 / A701 (Clevo W150HRM / W170HN)
    96 cores 753MHz (GF108), 128Bit GDDR5, e.g. Lenovo Y570p / Y560p
    144 cores 525 MHz (GF116), 128 Bit DDR3, e.g. Medion Akoya P6812

but i really want to see with my eyes gt 555m with memory size 3072 MB

    Yes.

You'll need real video editing software to do it with though. (Not Roxio Starter).

Galaxy, what are you talking about? :)

And anybody knows that the correct answer is 'both' are important. ;)

Those GPUz spec's look suspicious - not all the chips can have 1170M transistors (can they?).

Yeah I knew both are important :p

Same last picture is suspicious for me with 3GB
I don't know about first one too second is my GPU taken screen few minutes ago ...

I don't believe that third picture has 14.2GPixel fillrate mine is only 3.5 ? something is wrong here

    I just don't believe that 555m exist with 3GB

    tilleroftheearth

I don't know found another and looks like it DOES exist
the tranzistors are same in every GPU

    Dell xps17 comes/came with 3gb 555m

here is a review on it

"Alike the GT 445M, the GT 555M is based on Nvidia's GF 106 chip (Fermi architecture) and can make use of 144 shader units. The core runs with 590 MHz, the shader rate is 1180 MHz. Merely the memory rate has increased slightly. Instead of 800 MHz, the 3072 MB DDR3 VRAM now runs with 900 MHz. The memory bus of 192 bits is in no way extraordinary, but it doesn’t limit as much as the case of midrange GPUs. An interface with a width of 256 bit or a GDDR5 VRAM right away would have been perfect."

and same card in the alienware m14x too

Just a precision on the mess that are the GT555m models, models with 2GB have a crippled 128-bit bus which will affect overall performance so getting the 3GB is a good idea for the 192-bit bus if you are going to fully tax the GPU.There's also that crippled GT555m with 96 cuda cores instead of 144 with GDDR5.

Still, one or two screenshots do look a bit suspicious.

True, but some of the 1GB and 2GB bus models come with GDDR5 vram, but on a 128bit bus, what would be better, 1/2GB GDDR5 128bit or 3GB (G)DDR3 192 bit?

EDIT: Looks like the GDDR5 is alot faster like in the MSI G780 here

Yes, GDDR5 on a 128-bit bus is better, however, it won't help if your GPU has 96 cuda cores instead of 144. There are very few 144 cuda cores 555m with GDDR5 and the one in the lenovo is the crippled 96 cc version.

still think that gddr5 with 2GB would be best + slight overclock
