Just ordered an Asus n56vj laptop and am hoping to use an external monitor with 2560x1440 resolution.

The model only comes with VGA - HDMI outputs.

The graphic card is a 2gb NVIDIA GT 635M - which from what I see supports up to that resolution.

So will a monitor with that resolution work through HDMI - can HDMI even support that resolution or do I need to get a converter of some sorts? It seems like I would need to get a monitor that is HDMI 1.4 compatible.

Please let me know if anyone has experienced with this. Thanks!

HDMI should be controlled by the Intel graphics actually, and I believe HDMI specification will support that resolution as long as it's not older than version 1.3. I believe Intel HD 4000 Graphics only support up to 1920x1200 though, as it does not support dual link.

    Thanks.

I don't see anywhere that says its hdmi 1.4. Anyone know if it is?

Or is there a work around to get to that 2560 resolution(that looks good)?

D'oh! Okay, let me rephrase what I said: You're using Intel HD 4000 graphics, so your max resolution to an external monitor should be 1920x1200 @ 60 Hz. You could probably push a higher resolution than 1920x1200, but you would need to lower your refresh rate below 60Hz to do so. It has nothing to do with what HDMI standard you're using; I only threw that in there for surplus info. I apologize if it threw you off. :)

The new Haswell chips are slated to have a better iGPU, so perhaps we will see higher supported resolutions @ 60Hz refresh rate. But until then, the above is the most you're going to get, since the graphics card doesn't push the external display.

You can find more info here.

Well the good news is you just saved me a few hundred dollars by not getting a higher res monitor so thanks for that at least! Thanks!

One last noob question - the laptop as stated above has a VGA and HDMI output. Does this mean I can hook up 2 external monitors right out of the box as long as one supports the HDMI? Or does this require something else?

You're welcome! And yes sir; just keep an eye on your temps. Although the graphics card does not push the display, it still handles rendering and hardware acceleration. Use HWinfo32 or HWinfo64 (depending on whether your OS is 32-bit or 64-bit) to monitor your temperatures for the CPU and the GPU if you do this, just to be proactive. Other than that, you should be able to push two external displays. :)

Here's additional information broken down if you care to take a look.
