I'm considering buying an Asus N10, which uses the Atom 270 CPU.
When intel comes out with the dual core Atom later this year, how good is the chance that they would work in machines such as the N10?

    you cant
the atom is a ULV processor, meaning its soldered directly to the motherboard. Therefore it is not removeable, thus no cpu upgrades. I would wait for the dual core atoms before getting a new laptop.
You may also want to consider a P series monteveina cpu, cause they are very powerful and power efficient.

There's really no reason to buy a netbook unless you really really do not have the money to. Their weight is a bit less than the lightest proper notebooks but doesn't make up for the huge performance drop.

It'll be a while for Dual-Core Atoms to be out.

There are always reasons to buy things.
It's not "a bit less" in weight, if you want to compare netbooks and notebooks in the same price range (I don't count the Asus N10 as it is rather expensive and not as big a seller as the other's like the 1000H/HA). Also, you won't find a new notebook at $400 with 5hr battery life. Is there a notebook within $200 that is around 3lb and offers 5 hour battery life?
These are great for students who don't game in-class and don't intend to use it for that purpose. Good for people who don't need to bring a full size laptop with them everywhere they go but would still like to have something to check email/surf web/office-application while out and about.
I use my netbook every day. I have 2 other laptops and a dual core desktop as well but I find myself using this every day more than the others. For sure, doing more intensive work is out of the question but even for general futzing in Photoshop, it's fine.
I wouldn't expect dual core for netbooks anytime this year. Perhaps Q1 2009 at the earliest.
