I know this is an older laptop, but I am going to purchase it soon and plan on doing a few upgrades to get it up to today's "standards". The question I have is will a 920XM in this laptop be able to fully use 1600Mhz DDR3 RAM?

I have searched the Internet for hours without a definitive answer. Some say yes, some say no. Some say it will work as it should. Others say it will downclock to 1333Mhz. There was even an online Dell manual I found that states all i7 CPUs will only support 1333Mhz, except the 920XM, which will support 1600Mhz...

So can this CPU fully utilize 1600Mhz DDR3 RAM in the G73Jh, or will it just downclock to 1333Mhz?

    Thanks for the help.

Only Sandy Bridge laptops and beyond support 1600 MHz RAM, 1st generation Clarksfield quad core i7's support 1333 MHz RAM.

Those capable will downclock to 1333Mhz. They will certainly not run @1600Mhz with the 920XM. I have one paired with Kingston HyperX memory.

Thanks guys, those are the answers I needed.

This brings me up to a follow-up question: Is there any Sandy Bridge laptop motherboards that would fit the G73Jh?

    Thanks again.

No. Even if there were, for what you would spend on one, you could buy the whole notebook. 17-inch Sandy Bridge gaming laptops are put up for sale here all the time, many in the $600-800 range. Look through the Marketplace sub forum here.
