    Hi,
My boss asked me if a laptop could run a 30" dell display, And I said that I would find out if Hdmi/display Port would work. He uses two dvi cables for his pc.

    Thanks.

the physical size of a display doesn't matter much.

What resolution do you need to run it at?

And, are there hdmi plugs on the laptop and on the display? if not, you'll need some kind of adapter or external graphics box.

He is thinking of getting a new laptop and it would be good if it could run native resolution on the dell 30". He has two of the of the displays, one is from when they were fist released (at his home) and the second is newer (think within 12 months) at his office. Have had a look on a wiki and it looks like hdmi 1.3 and dp 1.0 can do it.

it will be a lot simpler if you can verify if there are actual/real hdmi connectors on his laptop and on the display.

you're going to have to define what 'native resolution' for both machines are.

Unless I'm mistaken, the Dell 30" monitors require a dual link dvi cable. Without it, you won't be able to run the native resolution of 2560x1600. And as far as I can remember, no laptop has a dual link dvi port.

HDMI has a max resolution of 1920*1080. DisplayPort, on the other hand, can do up to 2560*1600. Check your GPU for specifics.

I have asked him to see which ports the displays have, the new ones seem to have both display port and hdmi (from dell website) but not sure about the fist one he got.

hdmi can do more than 1080p look hear : HDMI - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It would be good to hear from someone that has a 30" connected to a laptop just to see if they can do native res.

    Anyway thanks for the replies.

To do 60 hz at 1440p or 1600p you would need a dual link HDMI cable.

I don't know if notebooks support dual link HDMI.

But Displayport and minidisplayport DO support 1600p and 1440p.
