Although Intel itself hasnt made any announcements, Intels partners seem to be very sure that SATA 6GB will be onboard the chipset. However when it comes to usb 3.0, the situation is less clear. Some speculate that usb 3.0 wont make it onto the series 6 chipset, but may be available from intel as a seperate optional usb 3.0 controller much like the one NEC provide currently. Intel would be slowing down adoption to keep the door open for their own light peak technology. Has anybody seen any roadmaps that would clarify this question?

At the current time USB 3.0 is very unlikely and all information is pointing towards only USB 2.0 support in the chipset.

Yes, it is unfortunate that Intel has decided to stick with USB 2.0 for their next platform.

just one question.. if intel's chipset doesn't support USB3.0 , how are there USB 3.0 ports built into laptop and how do they work without chipset support?
-
easy the laptops with USB 3.0 have a dedicated USB controller on the motherboard as well
-
Pretty much all current notebooks with USB 3.0 are using a NEC card.

Simply put, the OEM takes an open PCI slot on the motherboard and plugs in one of NEC's cards. Since it's a first gen device and practically a MacGyver solution, there are some power consumption quirks. USB 3 controller included in the chipset would use a little less power. (Not to mention Intel's engineers having the seemingly magical ability to reduce power nicely, such as with their wireless cards)

Ouch... that sounds real bad.

Well it's confirmed:
No USB 3.0 support for Sandy Bridge, but Intel is working on a separate controller similar to that of NEC. It should be released at the same time as Sandy Bridge.

Will Intel's Sandy Bridge feature usb 3.0 on its southbridge??
