Hi, I am looking to get a xps m1530 but only reason i havent bought it yet was cuz penryn is coming out. In my search to find the penryn release date i cam across something that said intel was making penryn compatible with current (word i didnt understand). Is it possible that i will be able to upgrade to a penryn processor later? lets say 2-3 years down the road?

It should, at least the first batch (the ones used til the montevina release). Dell might need to release a bios update though.
-
montevina? whats that?
-
The next version of centrino (like santa rosa is todays version). However, since that seems to still be using the same socket, you should be able to use a montevina penryn in a present-gen santa rosa laptop (like the dell XPS M1530).

But by then, you could just get a penryn M1530. Will be a lot easier.
-
yep... should work
though you won't get the 1000+mhz FSB speed of montevina, you'll still be at 800mhz -
im gettin the dell's 700 dollar discount till jan 31 after that i can't afford to wait any longer literraly speaking

Well, penryn was released officially for laptops yesterday, so the XPS might be updated before then.
-
hopefully i'll be able to get penryn before the deal ends. That woudl be awesome

At least for the Inspiron 1520, the A01 BIOS update from August included "support for newer Intel processors", which likely either means the T7800, or, far more likely, Penryn. I doubt the XPS 1530 will be long without Penryn compatibility - actually I'm guessing it already has it.
If you're looking for a pre-Montevina Penryn, it probably will be easier to just wait and get it now - it'll cost a decent amount to upgrade even in a couple years. The $700 off is an awful lot though, I wouldn't let that pass up just to get Penryn now. If it isn't available soon I'd just so ahead and buy with the Merom processor - the Penryn difference isn't that great right now anyways. -
how's the penryn compatibility looking for hp notebooks? I have a dv9500t santa rosa and I'm wanting to upgrade to penryn in the future...is there a bios update on the horizon?
-
well its not that great difference ^^

The dv2500-series can be upgraded (the bios update was release some weeks ago. So yeah, check the HP homepage to see if there are any new updates.
And the greatest difference is the batterylife. So 5-10% more power and more batterylife clock for clock.
Will Penryn Processor fit into the current one Compatabillity
