Is this program safe to run, I have downloaded it but I am not installing it until I get proper advice. Wikipedia do have a stub article on it, but since it's a stub, I cannot deem that as useful.

If it is safe do not try to lead me towards software that might be better.

If it isn't safe, then you can lead me towards better software, mainly temperature measurement and fan speed control.

It's safe alright, as long as you don't try to modify the Advanced Settings without knowing what are your doing :)

Give it a go, As long as you are careful, just keep out of the advanced settings as the previous post recommends.

Its safe but you wont be able to control the fans, so you might aswell use HWMonitor

It's funny, almost everyone who downloads this program wants to control their fanspeed. And the thing this program does not offer is control of fanspeed. How they picked that name puzzles me.

If you need a tool that can change your computer's fan speeds, read the temperatures of your motherboard and your hard disk, read voltages and fan speeds and check the status of your hard disk using S.M.A.R.T. or SCSI attributes, then you came to the right place. SpeedFan is the software to go!

It's in the first sentence of that page...

I know it's says so but I have never been able to make it work on my laptops.

    Have you?

Maybe the tool is meant for desktops.

I've tried speedfan on 3 laptops and 2 desktops, I was able to control the fans speed only on the one of the desktops.

Playing with the advanced settings I managed to stop the fans or push em on the highest speed on one of the laptops(Asus Z94L), but this is not exactly 'control' :)

Nope, no fan control...And it doesn't even detect my HDD. And I believe it does have S.M.A.R.T....

The support page shows a bunch of motherboards that it can use to control the fan speed, but I don't know how to identify mine :/

A bunch of motherboards for desktops..... It should detect the hdd though..Go to the S.M.A.R.T tab and select the hdd from the list. Or you mean it doesn't measure the temp?

I did go to the SMART tab and there is nothing on the list :/.
I clicked the two arrows on the right of that tab, assuming they are to refresh the detection, but it didn't do anything.

But I got HD Tune and Notebook Hardware Control (NHC)

Which both have much better control than SpeedFan...

Although this fits the topic of the thread, I fail to see the reasoning behind posting that...

I always used NHC until i discovered RMClock. I prefer RMClock now because it is much lighter and has a smaller footprint. They both offer some similar and some different functions.

It was helpful to me because I did not exactly know what mischief was.
