I am tired of waiting for a 2TB drive!

I read however that the 15mm drives are actually closer to 14mm and may fit very snugly in many ODD drive bays.

What do the good folks on the forum think about doing this? It should be possible right?

Heat would be up but then again the 12.7mm metal enclosure I have inside my M15x ought to absorb the extra heat.

Depends on the ODD bay and how much clearance it has. 2mm may not seem like much but if it's a hard interference it's not going to go in. I'm not sure your needs for a 2TB drive, but instead why not set up a Smart NAS and access all your larger files remotely? It's also not about the M15x absorbing the extra heat. If there's no way for airflow to get around the drive, the drive may heat up and push it to higher than recommended temps (i.e. > 50C) which obviously isn't good for the drive. I don't know that you'll know unless you try, or unless someone else with M15x has tried. In that case, probably want to post this in M15x forum instead. Probably more likely to get a response based on your specific situation.

    I wasn't able to fit a 15mm drive in a 12.7mm optical bay.

Didn't seem like a big difference, but it was huge.

i would look at the casing surrounding the the ODD bay and see if i couldn't disassemble the laptop and thin it out with air tools or in most peoples case, a Dremel.

If you're going to mod anything, be very careful. You might just be modding the chassis, but you're still liable to damage components, especially if you're inexperienced with tools like a Dremel.

    I second HTWingNut's advice.

I agree with this whole wholeheartedly, experience required.
