i was told before that my Sony SVE1512J1EW only has one ram port, so if i wanted to upgrade from 4GB I would need 1 8x RAM stick

But i spoke to Crucial and they have said there are 2 slots and i can upgrade to 16gb RAM

But as i use my laptop for just:
web browsing = 1 google chrome browser always open with 12-15 all open
    itunes
video pkayback - either .avi file or streamed online
    MS Word/Excel

They feel 8GB is enough and theres no need to get 16GB with my usage as its mainly needed for gaming

So i have seen the following 4gb RAM stick on ebay, will thIs work in my sony laptop:

    SAMSUNG RAM 1x4GB PC3-12800S-11 DDR3-1600 Notebook SODIMM | eBay

What does the U stand for after 12800?

Being a student cnt really afford a brand new stick, and in the UK they are quite expensive

    - also, the Sony website says the RAM in the laptop is PC3L-12800 but i dont think the L (Low voltage) matters when its always plugged in with no battery in (95% of the time)
    Is the PC3L necessary?

    Spec:
    SVE1512J1E | VAIO E Series Laptop | Technical Specifications | SVE1512J1EW.CEK | SVE1512J1E | Sony

    thanks

Doesn't matter if the notebook is plugged in or not; the 'L' matters.

It could be that your model and/or M/B can work with standard voltage RAM - but if you're trying to save money (and time... which is money in the end) then simply get the properly spec'd part in the first place.

    Good luck.

I'd go with a single 4GB memory stick if applicable (slot available) with pre-installed 4GB stick on your laptop for a total of 2x4GB (default one plus new 4GB stick) running in dual channel mode which is much better for the Intel onboard graphics and overall system performance.

    Check list for you:

Is a user memory upgrade option available on your laptop via opening bottom lid and upgrading the memory yourself?

Download and run software like CPU-Z and HWInfo to get information on what's the speed and CAS latency of the default 4GB stick pre-installed on your laptop.

Let us know the details and myself or someone just as knowledgeable on the NBRF can let you know your memory upgrade options.
