Anyone know this new drive from Toshiba?
TOSHIBA MK1637GSX 160GB 5400 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Notebook Hard Drive

It claims 3.0G/s and lower power consumption.

It won't outperform a 7K100. It won't tranfer at 3.0 GB/s, because it is limited physically, by how fast data can be read from the platter. Transfer rates are often much less, at around 60 to 70, for 7200 RPM drives, I think. They are normally SATA 150 (1.5 GB/s).

Also, on 7k100, there is an E7k100. What is the difference?

The specifications are pretty much the same, however, the E7K100 is a drive that is used in servers and industry. It doesn't appear to be used in notebooks, because that is the 7K100.

It won't be faster but it will be close.

rpm > capacity (higher data density does equal some increase in performance).

They are the same physical drive. They each use a different firmware, with the E7K100 optimized for server use and they 7k100 optimized for notebook use.

Nothing really beats the hitachi 7k100. Even the seagate 7k100 isn't that close ...although considering its the same density/speed.

160gb 5400 will be about 8mb/s slower which is pretty significant.

The Hitachi will outperform any 7200rpm drives in notebooks, at the cost of noise and heat. I believe they've announced 10k-rpm drives but I haven't seen any available yet---those would be king of the hill until solid state arrives.

I both the Hitachi 7K100 and the Seagate 7200.1. They both perform about the same. I can't tell the difference. The hitachi does benchmark a bit faster, but there is no real-world difference.

I prefer the Seagate. Its quieter and uses a bit less power.

I wonder if upcoming hybrid hard drives will be able to match its performance at lower heat/noise levels?

I've also used both drives and will confirm that - I could never tell the difference between the Seagate and the Hitachi.

I have sold both along with a Toshiba 7200rpm 16mb cache - the Seagate / Hitachi 8mb cache (same models) outperformed the Toshiba but were about equal in performance vs each other - also just for note the Toshiba (which I only sold one) failed.
