With the recent release of the Samsung 1TB mSATA 840 EVO, we now have an affordable (relatively speaking) 1TB mSATA drive. The next step in mSATA would inevitably be to increase the size/speed of the drive. However with the release of the M.2 (NGFF) form factor SSDs mSATA is now outdated. Do you think that the Samsung EVO is the peak of mSATA SSDs? Will SSD makers begin to focus their efforts on M.2 and forgo mSATA?

I wouldn't be optimistic: It will be another year or two before the NAND density gets another increase, which would allow most SSD companies to reach the 1TB milestone.

But maybe we'll be lucky and Samsung (who originated the mSATA format) will see the potential market of people wanting to upgrade, will carry mSATA through to another generation. After all, it's the same hardware in a slightly different board layout. Samsung must have noticed the upgrade market since it made the EVO mSATA a retail part. All the previous Samsung mSATA SSDs were only sold to manufacturers (although some ended up in retail via the spare parts chain).

We have to wait and see.
