My Gateway NX570XL has a media card reader slot. This is the make of it:

Texas Instruments PCIxx12 Integrated FlashMedia Controller

Is it at all possible to update it so it could read SDHC cards?

nope you need a sdhc reader to read sdhc cards (they are not backwards compatible with sd readers.

Unfortunately, some devices do not detect SD-HC cards. The most famous example is the Wii.

It could be a hardware or an os issue, if ktron's link does not work, then your hardware simply does not support sdhc ( which is common in older devices)

then probably ur actual hardware cant read SDHC cards even with a firmware upgrade..... (SDHC hardware is different from SD hardware)

get a USB SDHC reader then...
