So we all know the big six laptops that have the gtx 980 in them. I'm wondering if the desktop card will be made exclusively for these larger chasis laptops or will they eventually shrink them down to a normal size, say for a p770 or p750.

Curious if I should go for the 980m or wait and see what happens. Anyone have any insight into this?

No. It's filler until Pascal hits in Q2 2016.

No, the GTX 980 won't be commonplace. They're pretty much a "halo" item, which exists mostly for bragging rights that you have the biggest-and-baddest toy in your neighborhood. The GTX 980's that get put into laptops are actually binned desktop GTX 980s that can operate at 150W (rather than the full 165W of the desktop version of the GTX 980). So the yield will not be high enough where they can consistently crank out laptop-bound GTX 980's in volume.

Additionally, the GTX 980 costs an additional $500 above the GTX 980m configurations in laptops. As with most "halo" items, you get absolutely horrible price-to-performance ratio. The only reason they exist is for people to just buy the biggest-and-baddest hardware that exists, when money is no object.

The wider card is supposedly 200W and fully unlocked. The standard MXM versions are either 150W or 180W. The 200W version is $350 more than a 980m, 150W and 180W will be less yet, likely $150-$250 more than 980m.

That's one of the reasons the GTX 970M is so popular. Its price/performance ratio is amazing. Where I live, the 980M costs 40% more than the 970M, and for 1080p gaming, there's not a single game in my library that I can't play on high/ultra at 1080p with the 970M.

Didn't know there was going to be multiple versions of the 980 available for laptops. Wonder how they'll preform in relation to each other stock/overclocked.

Probably not a whole lot better than an Oced 980m.

Probably waste of money. Either go all out full 980 or 980m or for those with lesser cooling or requirements(me) 970m.

I believe the advantage of the desktop 980 though is that there are no overclock restrictions imposed. And with the lower wattage version you can run them in standard MXM card size so you can SLI them. Plus it's a great card for Oculus Rift to achieve the resolution and FPS required.
