I am in the market for 2x1gb 200pin DDR2 667 (PC2 5300 or PC2 5400) SO-DIMM chips, and I've been keeping an eagle eye watch on the prices for these and I haven't seen much movement...
Should a wait for a good deal or buy now?
If I decide to buy now, I plan on purchasing one of these sticks from newegg:
- G.SKILL 1GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300)
- Patriot 1GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300)
- Transcend JetRam 1GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300)
Any suggestions?
I am using these to replace my current setup in my Dell e1505 (2x512 PC2 4200).
Thanks,

Unfortunately, RAM prices don't tend to drop much. And as with everything else, you pay more for the small size.

5300 ram is mainstream right now so I can't see it going down much. It shouldn't go up either though.
-
if it changes, it will go up because many people will upgrade for vista
-
why would the upgrade to vista make it go up? did I miss something?

I would guess a small rise over the next few months as well (Vista)

I agree there is likely going to be a rise until end of the summer but then we are in line for the end of the year price fixing as they all gear up for the holiday's.
Actually, it all depends on production levels of each size modules. I do not think the productions levels of 512mb modules will increase and will likely keep decreasing. This has the effect of decreasing the supply in the new module market which could cause a price increase. The used market will likely see a large glut on the market as people move to 1gb modules as they upgrade for Vista. So, suspect overall 512mb modules might not increase but would not be surprised if they do.
1gb will increase though even with increased production levels because there should be an increase in demand for new machines coupled with an increased demand for those who did wanted to wait for Vista before adding more RAM. 2gb modules will still decrease because their current price point is beyond insane and for those early adopter types who are not concerned with price (must be niiice.) -
I have 2 sticks of DDR2@667 (PC5400) 1GB from OCZ. At around $105, it's pretty expensive, but I love OCZ, so...
I got the first one from Fry's a few months back and it came with MIR, so final price was like $80.
O looky, price drop! $90 after MIR

Around New Years Newegg had this big promotion and you could have nabbed a 1 GB DDR2 PC5300 G.Skill for around $80 (plus others, but that was the most memorable). I don't think the price of DDR2 will drop until some time after Santa Rosa is launched cause that has a higher FSB.
Personally, I feel OCZ is more stable overall....while a lot of people use G.Skill for overclocking (though I've heard plenty of stories of people oc'ing their OCZ's as well). -
The PC5300 price was raised simply because the manufacturers didn't prepare for it shift to main stream so fast. Right now, they boost their productivity, and the price drop close to its initial price as before.

I haven't been paying attention to notebook RAM prices, but desktop RAM has dropped significantly in the past month or so. Was impossible to get a decent 2GB kit for much under $300 for a while, now has dropped to more like $250, with some of the cheaper kits even coming in under $200 after rebate.

I was looking at DDR2-667 about 5 months ago and Corsair, OCZ, etc were about $80 for 1Gb. Then the prices shot up to about $120. At $84 the G. Skill looks like a steal now. If you need it I would buy it now. It's not going to go below $84 for many more months, IMHO.

Not to hijack, but what is the difference between PC2-5400 and PC2-5300 RAM? I am looking to buy an Asus A8JP and Crucial's site recommends the PC2-5300.
Will the prices of SO-DIMMs drop?
