Looking for a good size to price ratio (RPM doesn't matter really, but above 4200 is preferred).
Here's the current 40GB HD in this old laptop:

You can click "tech specs" to get specifications. How do I tell if my laptop work with a certain HD?

Your notebook needs an IDE HDD, as per Dell's site. (the one newegg is a SATA HDD)
To confirm you can either check the drivers installed in Device Manager > IDE/ATA ATAPI controllers, or (easier) download HD Tune and upload a screenshot of the INFO page.
Or you can remove your current HDD and check what sort of interface it has. -
Your system does use ATA/IDE/PATA hareddrives.
If you want something which is really fast, go for the 160gb 5400rpm Samsung HM160HC, or if you want a higher capacity go for the 250gb 5400rpm beve drive from Western Digital.
Currently, you can purchase the Samsung drive for about $65 or the WD for about $120.
The Samsung drive is the fastest IDE laptop drive, and the WD takes a close second in speed.
Both are excellent drives, and will make your laptop feel brand new after you install the operating system on it.

I've changed my mind, since this will be an upgrade for a friend who won't really go past 50-60GB, I'd like to get him an 80GB hard drive.
Weird thing on NewEgg is, 80GB is only $10 cheaper than a 160GB. Doesn't seem worth it to save $10. Hmm, looking to spend around $30-40 for a 80GB, I'll see if I can find anything on eBay. -
Its not worth it to skimp here. The Hm160HC is almost twice the speed of any 80gb drive, and $10 savings for an 80gb will not justify his action. If he wants it to be fast, get the Samsung drive. If your friend buys a 80gb drive, (dual 40gb platters), he/she may not notice any performance increase over the current drive.
I bought my Hm160HC here:

Here is my review of the drive, maybe it can change his/her mind into buying it:
