    Hi everyone,

    I have a Dell XPS L502X dual boot - Win7 + Ubuntu 12.04.

Till now I had one 4GB stick in my slot which was working perfectly for me but for sum reason i just decided to upgrade so, I bought a 4GB 1333MHz RAM Stick from: Amazon.com: 4GB DDR3 RAM MEMORY FOR DELL VOSTRO V130 V131 XPS 14Z 15 15 L502X 15Z 15Z L511Z (DDR3-1333MHz 204-pin SODIMM): Computers & Accessories

But for some reason I dont know what ... but my system wont work with this RAM. Tried just the new one and both together as well.

If I try to start windows it goes till "Starting Windows" .. den the screen goes black .. sumtimes i can c d mouse but comp hangs ... wont get till the login page.
But with my ubuntu 12.04 .. it works perfectly ... It even shows my ram as 8GB total ...

I contacted Dell and took a look as a few forums .. Some advice to reinstall Win7 but I really dont want to (loads of stuff installed) .. unless dats d only way i can resolve this problem.

Please can someone help me with this ?

    Thanks in advance...

    UPDATE:
I tried various combinations .. such as:

Old RAM in Slot1 / Slot 2: Works Perfectly

New RAM in Slot1/ Slot2: Goes till "Starting Windows" Screen but then the video is screwed up after dat. .. horizontal and vertical coloured lines ... nothing else ..

New RAM + Old RAM any slot: Goes till "Starting Windows" Screen den the screen goes black -- comp freezes and dies.

I can Still use Ubuntu in all scenarios above.
Plus .. Win7 works in Safe Mode in all scenarios above. - Tried Daignostic mode dat works too ...
    Just not with all services.

As the last resort I am thinking of replacing my HDD wid a spare one and reinstalling Win7 on it n den c if everything works .. if it does will do on original disk too .. :( ..
    Please Help anyone ...

Problems with RAM are solved by replacing the RAM.

Return it (or throw it away) and buy a brand name SoDIMM with a lifetime warranty.

I would suggest buying 2x 4GB modules and selling the original RAM (after you have tested/confirmed for at least 24 Hrs the new RAM is 100% stable in your system).

    Good luck.

The rated spec's are not all a SoDIMM needs to work or be compatible. It obviously doesn't work on your system.

Buy another brand RAM module and hope it works better (or, return the 'broken' module and see if a replacement works for your system).

    Good luck.

Run memtest. See if it comes up with any errors. If not then it's likely your windows install is borked. If it does, then get new ram.

My guess is that Ubuntu isn't trying to access the new ram since it's very light on memory, so you're not seeing issues.

Does windows continue to work with just the old ram installed? Run a memory test or benchmark and use Ubuntu to see if it is perfectly stable and working.

If there's a clicking noise from your HDD then it's definitely busted. As for the RAM, if the new sticks still don't work you may want to try just pulling individual sticks and running your system on different combinations of them for a while. I had to do this to determine what sticks were faulty in my p150em, as memtest86 constantly returned no errors.
