    Hello,

I recently installed Windows 8 Professional on my Clevo W170ER notebook, the soundchip is 'VIA HD Audio'.
I didn't have any sound through the speakers, while it showed activity at the volume mixer. With headphones the sound worked fine. After trying several different drivers, all of the sudden the sound seemed to work. But when restarting, it can happen that the sound stops working. I noticed that when the sound is working, every now and then a click/tick sound comes through the speakers, at first I thought my HDD was causing it.

I tried a lot of different drivers, none seem to work flawless, anyone around with similar issues?

    Regards

Are you running the new UEFI BIOS? also, did you install the certified Windows 8 VIA HD drivers from Sager?

I'm not running a UEFI BIOS, I didn't know there was one available. I'm running a PREMA BIOS.
I also installed the drivers from Sager, but I had exactly the same issue with them.

I'd rather not update the BIOS, since I like the possibilities of the PREMA BIOS. In that case I would go back to Windows 7 I think.

UEFI is not a brand of BIOS it is at type of BIOS...

Normally; you can't change the type of BIOS from one type to another: if the options in the Prema BIOS are to your liking; then I recommend to update to the latest available Prema BIOS for your specific system to have the most stability, performance and features.

It may even fix the issue you're having.

What I would be more inclined to do though is to do a full, clean install of Win8 Pro and do a proper/specific install of the drivers in the right order (does Clevo offer any suggestions on the order of drivers?).

The ones that will make the most difference with install order are:

    Chipset
    Video
    Sound
    Mouse/Touchpad
    LAN
    Wireless

Is there any mention of the order of drivers for your specific model?

    Good luck.

I'm aware about the fact that UEFI is a type of BIOS, guess my last post didn't make it look like that.

I tried a clean installation, usually I start with chipset and VGA drivers anyway. As far as I know there's no specific driver installation order for my notebook. The problem hasn't been solved after the clean install.
I did see there's a newer PREMA BIOS available, I guess I gonna flash that one and see if it solves my problem.

Thanks for the input so far, I'll keep you posted.

Yeah, windows 8 doesn't play nice with the non uefi Clevo bios. Be warned you can't over clock your ram if you go with the prema uefi bios. Clevo broke it somehow.

I flashed the v3 Prema UEFI BIOS and did a windows 8 UEFI installation. The sound issue seemed to disappear :).
I indeed read that overclocking the RAM isn't possible anymore with the new BIOS, hopefully it will be possible again one day. I guess it's because of the variety of RAM modules that are used in these notebooks.

Thanks again for the input guys.
