ok i assume that u have a HP by looking at your avatar(or what ever it is called). you can delete the SwSetup folder in your C drive(that gives you 2.5~3 gig more space)that contains all your drivers installed, and in future if you want you can install your drivers from recovery CD. if you have updated to Vista SP1 and want it to make it permanent you can delete the old setup files by typing "vsp1cln" at command prompt(that gives 1~2 gigs of space). if you have recovery discs you can delete the recovery drive(i guess D drive) if ever you want reset to factory settings you can use the recovery discs instead of recovery partition( that gives you ~10 gigs of space). and clean up your disk with "disk cleanup"( i suggest using ccleaner) may be once a week
    hope this helps!!

Before you delete "SwSetup", I highly recommend to backup somewhere as well. It's true that you can recover from recovery CD/DVD, but in that disc, there isn't all driver + apps like SWSetup folder.

At least, most of HP machines I have don't provide Fingerprint software in recovery CD.

I cant think of much to delete out of vista. Extra languages take up space, and thats about it. The other stuff is small.

If you have a hybernation file that can be large (several GB) so turn off that feature and delete that file if you know you wont use it. Beyond that sounds like your just going to have to manage what you install ontop of Vista.

Sounds like your saying your 500gb hard drive was partitioned to 450gb and then out of that 450 you have 392GB usable. If thats the case you must have a 50gb hidden partition that you could free up but it probably has some semi important files on it that HP does not want you to mess with.
