I'm looking for a way to setup a wireless LAN on my laptop to my desktop. The type of configuration I'm hoping exists is one whereas a plug something small\mobile into my laptop and then something gets plug into my desktop so they can communicate. Does anyone have any recommendations or what to look for ?

Meaning your desktop and your notebook on wireless?

    . A router supporting WLAN
. A WLAN PCI card for your desktop.
. Make both system "share" to be able to see each other.

I take it that your notebook is wireless ready.

    cheers ...

If you already have your own network where you live it should be easily doable by setting up a network connection in the Windows control panel and sharing files/folders.

D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme N Gigabit Router ($95) and a N receiver for performance if not any old G will work.

you need N in notebook as well for it to work, but if its 2 years or younger it will most likely have it.

I recomend the N though because youll have far superior coverage if that is to expensive for you there is other D-link Wireless N Routers that run $25-65 but you have to dig. i find that is best bang for buck though
