A friend of mine just told me a story about his macbook. When he bought it 4 years ago, for some reason he opted to not get a wireless card in it. Now he finds himself in a situation where he needs wireless internet and doesn't want to buy a new computer.

He tried a few electronics stores for a USB wireless reciever, but couldn't find one that works on a mac. He called the applestore and they said he had to have them install one into the machine for $200.

So are there any other ways to get an old macbook to connect wirelessly to the internet?

I didn't know that AirPort Extreme was even optional on any of the MacBooks. Are you sure that it is indeed a MacBook and not an iBook?

Nope, I'm not sure, was there even a choice 4 years ago?

Just out of curiosity, how could you not be sure if it is an iBook or a MacBook? Right below the screen, it should say iBook, iBook G4, PowerBook G3, PowerBook G4, MacBook, MacBook Pro, etc.....

Definitely an iBook. As K-TRON said, MacBooks didn't exist 4 years ago.

Ok, now that I know that MacBooks weren't on the market four years ago, the only thing that is needed is the kind of iBook he has. If it is a G3 iBook, then it won't be a problem to get AirPort installed. However, I am not sure about the iBook G4 as I have never owned one.
