As notebook hardware changes toward usage with Vista, won't XP be disappearing as an install option as drivers for chipsets will not be abailable, etc.?

As long as there is demand, there will be XP on the market. Well possibly not in 2011 (when MS stops supporting it).
I don't see the market moving toward Vista for a while though (corporate/business) -
All depends on MS... Last I heard they weren't letting OEMs sell it past the end of the year.

XP will not disappear. That may be Microsoft's intention but corporate users don't just switch the OS that they have mission critical system operating upon. I do IT consulting and our systems don't even support IE7 let alone vista and thats the way it will be for some years to come I guarantee. Hell, Microsoft was forced to allow most of the bigger PC manufactures to still allow the option of XP. It does not help that XP is a mature relatively stable platform that is more efficient and lighter weight than Vista. Vista will take over eventually but the 2011 deadline for XP support may get extended based on Corporate users unwillingness to switch before Vista has been proven stable and probably has a service pack or two released.

The installed base of XP is enormous, and despite Vista having been out for 8 months now XP is still by far the most used desktop OS in the world (something in the 80% range, last I checked). So no, XP is not going to disappear any time soon. Manufacturers will continue to release XP-compatible hardware and software for quite a while.

Microsoft will stop selling Windows XP to OEMs on January 31, 2008:

I'm going to buy a new PC shortly with XP and I already have an unused copy of XP sitting around.

Vista gets railed for being a RAM hog, but what it does is use as much memory as possible to make the user experience as smooth as it can. The big problem here is that Vista is mostly 32-bit right now and thus cannot use more than a little over 3GB of memory (I blame the Core Duo processors for the prevalence of 32-bit...), and when the typical *power* user uses it and throws things at it that it doesn't anticipate, it can kind of fumble over its own feet. It's memory management system is actually the most advanced of any of the big OSes right now, including OSX. It can be argued that the hardware technology simply hasn't caught up to it yet.
That being said, it's over-priced, obnoxious, and Microsoft wants to own our nuts with it. XP / Ubuntu all the way, and I don't mind using OSX or Vista if it's there. -
Even if production stops in January 31 2008 as stated above, they wont stop upgrading it SP3 is supposed to be coming out next year sometime with SP1 for Vista relax peoples if theres demand Microsoft wont stop.
