There is a processor going for really low on ebay right now and I may bid on it but I'm not sure that it will be compatible for my laptop. I have a Gateway NV7901u.

    Other info:

    MB Brand : Gateway
    MB Model : NV79
NB : Intel Havendale/Clarkdale Host Bridge re
    SB : Intel HM55 rev 05
GPU Type : Mobility Radeon HD 5650
    DirectX Version : 11.0
    RAM : 8192 MB DDR3 Dual Channel
    RAM Speed : 532.1 MHz (4:16) @ 7-7-7-20
    Slot 1 : 4096MB (10700)
Slot 1 Manufacturer : Micron Technology
    Slot 2 : 4096MB (10700)
Slot 2 Manufacturer : Micron Technology

Here is the processor that it currently has compared with the one I'm looking at on ebay.

    Compare Intel® Products

Any suggestions? If not this one, what would one suggest for my current laptop?

Different platforms (Arrandale vs. Sandy Bridge) so don't pursue.

A better way forward is to sell what you have and buy a new SNB platform or even better, wait a few short months and buy the latest IB (Ivy Bridge) platforms starting around March of 2012.

    Good luck.

If you wanted upgraded graphics you should have bought the nv78, mine is pending upgrade to GTX 285m and someday a 6970m.
I think the boards are compatible, you could always go back to the core 2 architecture for the sake of standardized graphics (MXM 3.0)
    :p

Ack. Thread revival. First it was the processor( I have found suitors, I just haven't decided on installing one yet), now I' looking to do the video card. I keep getting the "Video display driver stopped working, but recovered", when I play certain games like minecraft and when the private bytes shoot over 1.3 mil, but starts at 640k(javaw.exe).

The previous poster said something about MXM cards. Is the Mobility Radeon HD 5650 one of them, and if so, what would be the next best thing for me? Other than that, this laptop has served me very well.

Awesome! Thanks! If I decide to purchase another one of these, then I will definitely do that!

Yeah, did you check the link in my signature? I cut a big hole in the bottom and used a heatsink from a much more powerful laptop, then taped a fan to the outside and wired it to the CPU fan. The cooling is really pretty good considering.

These older MXM 3.0 laptops seem to support everything you throw at them, probably would even work with a GTX 680m (though I'd certainly recommend using a more budget card that is 75w not 100w).
