The time is coming for me to replace my laptop. I think I could probably squeeze another 6-12 months out of my current box, but I am wondering if it is worth investing in some upgrades or holding out.

What significant technologies coming out between now and early 2010? I am going to aim for a mid-range laptop with a focus on battery life and modest performance. I also want a bright screen, but I will worry about that when I actually get around to buying it.

    FAQ for future

Well there are a few laptops coming out with the new Montevina chipset and they are now looking on to Mobile I7's, as well there are a few laptops coming out with the new Video slots MXM 3.0's (Sager 9280, and Alienware M17x) so it would be good for future upgrades... Oh and The new M17x starts around 1700, with dual core, 4gb ddr3 ram, "slot loaded DVD" new to PC's... and then it has 2 GPU's a standard Nvidia 260M which is great then the intergrated Nvidia GPU for up to 3 hours of battery life, switches seemlessly if you need it and a really cool update the Alienware...

Anything else you were looking for specifically, I mean there are new laptops coming out in 3D if you are really interested lol...

This is always an interesting question, and it can no doubt can be a very vexing dilemma. The choices, that is, instant gratification by purchasing an immediate upgrade now, or waiting 6-12 months for newer, more powerful tech to arrive, have their good and bad sides.

The fact of the matter is that regardless if you buy now or wait later, there will always be new tech on the horizon. Waiting and making a purchase based on investing in new tech when typically a refresh is on the way in the near future can get oneself into a very ugly cycle.

My opinion? Hang onto your laptop for the time being. By the time your 6 months rolls around, you'll be looking at the fall 2009 timeframe, where deals on new laptops will be at their lowest for returning college students.
