could we ever slap in, let's say an x1600, all by ourselves.
I personally have the x1400, and i saw in the sticky that it was "almost" impossible to upgrade, and if we did, it would be through dell.
But I'm pretty sure I could manage with a decent step-by-step guide.

No, it's very rare to be able to upgrade a graphics card. You can generally upgrade to the best card within the model line as long as you have a dedicated card to begin with. An e1505 with the GMA950 cannot accept a x1300 or x1400--the motherboards are different. The rare exceptions to this rule are some dells (not the e1505) and MXM/axiom (which is dead).

If dell comes out with the x1450 in their e1505 in the future, and everything else stays the same about the model, you will probably be able to upgrade.

Most of these cards are built directly onto the motherboard or have a proprietary design to them. MXM is a standard that all parts adhere to, which is entirely different (and better).

Step 1 of a guide: "Convince Dell to design/build a better GPU using their proprietary connection on these motherboards, or design a new mobo if need be."

I know...life sucks (and so does non-MXM GPU tech).

I think mostly power requirements have gone down (they moved to a smaller process). Nothing earth shattering, but it would give you better battery life and more overclocking potential.

okay dokay....i will settle for my x1400.
it's a good card. Just played the F.E.A.R. demo on medium settings (the game auto-detected and had everything set on low settings . Medium settings had just the same frame rate. x1400 is largely under appreciated, and underestimated.

I agree, but i think dell should have a option for a 7600 or a x1600 in the dell e1505.

Its quite possible that the ati 1450 is the exact same performance as the x1400 which is why it is stillborn

Asus has a computer with the x1450. Unfortunately its a 17 inch one and the chances that someone will buy it and test it for us is small.

The part has been out for months so Im using some logic and assuming its a worthless upgrade....

I always thought that if the 6400 (or any other Inspiron line other than the XPS and 9400) had a better video card option, it would probably take away too much market for the 9400, which is why Dell always configured the 6000 (what I got) and the 6400 to have a low-end card.

I don't think too many people would bother with the 9400/XPS line if the lower models had a 7600/X1600 (it's plenty for a laptop) in them, not counting the enthusiasts and hardcore gamers.

I thought the e1505 came with a dedicated card as an option? If so can't you just upgrade those models with the dedicated card, if dell starts selling the same model with an updated card?

No the 7900gs is a much better card but people only want 15.4s but still want good vidcard performance. I dont think the e1505 with a x1600 would affect the 9400 sales. I think if they made this option more people would buy dells. Alot of people just dont want a 17 inch but want somthing beter then a x1400 so they go to a asus or compal or acer and so on. Even if they did sell a bit less 9400s, the more sales in the e1505s would well make up for it.
