It's a Seagate, a perfectly fine company that makes perfectly fine Hard Drives. Just an FYI, it is a desktop hard drive. I don't want anyone confused since this is a laptop forum.

Oh, I'm aware it is a desktop drive. I should have said this is for an external data backup drive I'm going to build.

    Also, the 320GB is here:
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8295579&type=product&id=1172880157994

    Also good prices!

My main concern is I think these are the Barracuda series of drives...with which I have *NO* experience with them. I've done the Seagate experience before and was fine, but I have not tried out that specific series. EDIT: I might be wrong on the Barracuda part...

I'd like the 750GB one, but I cannot justify the cost... :D

For once I could actually go and pick up a drive and use it the same day...! Tempting...

Barracuda are quite reliable, backed with 5 (five!) year warranty. There's no 100% guarantee with any drive against a failure, but I think this is one of the better ones. Personally, I got a pair of 750gb ones, and they work just fine for me ;)

Yea, Barracuda are quite reliable. I've been using a 320GB Barracuda drive for quite some time, and they've never crashed. No problems so far

Seagate has a very good reputation with hard drives, so I wouldn't worry at all.

If you want a cheap harddrive, buyin online is the best.

    http://www.frys.com/product/4987891 300gb 60$
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822136073&CMP=AFC-Bensbargains 500gb for 90$ using paypal20 (code)
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144450&CMP=AFC-Bensbargains 500gb for 80$ using paypal20 (code)

But if you dont trust online resellers, then buy from bestbuy :O

I'm cool with online (especially like newegg), but the OEM warranty (3 years or less) just does not cut it for me. Last time I got a drive it was from CDW...$10 more expensive for a 320GB-Seagate drive compared to NewEgg, but there was a 5 year warranty on the CDW retail drive against NewEgg's OEM 1 year. I've seen some OEM drives with a full warranty from NewEgg, but at least once they told me the warranty info was inaccurate on OEMs and was only 1 year...

I cannot get the fry's link to work though...

I refuse to support Maxtor (several bad drives) and I've heard enough about WD to scare me off.

Ah, Best Buy is great for buying crap on sale. If you buy it just because it's on sale and open it up and realize you don't really want it, you can just return it within 30 days even if it's open (for anything that's not a laptop/desktop/camera, anyway).

Does that include external harddrives? No restocking fee?

    Well, here's the deal:

I've got an additional 12% coupon off for these things, so next week I'm probably going to check this out. If the coupon stacks that is...

I'm pretty sure it'll work, it's just that these deals only seem to be valid this week. I dont think they'll last by next because they were in my local ads for this week.

I've got the 500 eSata Pro. 5 year warranty, and aluminum top case. I real happy with it. This one cost a bit more as it's dual interface but another option gets you all three, usb,Sata and firewire 400..no 800 seen at this time.
Dual interface is $149 at Sam's club. The interface cards plug in on the bottom on the pro.

Cons; not stackable, on/off switch is electronic with a second or so delay.

I also have the $119 Mybook 500 as well, all plastic case with only one year warranty, but running fine for the last 8 months.

I got the 500GB drive from BB, a case for it should be here in 3 days or so.

And I only paid about $109 including taxes and crap, since the sale stacked with a 12% off!

Yes, that includes external hard drives :) There's only a restocking fee on open laptops, cameras, and GPS. Laptops and cameras as well as desktop computers and monitors/projectors need to be returned within 14 days. Everything else in the store you can buy, try out, and return for the cost you paid for it within 30 days. They have a great return policy compared to a lot of places out there. And, no shipping costs, of course.

In theory, you can buy a TV just for Superbowl weekend and return it the next week. You could also buy every router they carry just to figure out which one has the best range and then return all the others :D

So to all you Best Buy haters (not that I've seen too many here at NBR), you're just dumb for not knowing how to use Best Buy to your advantage :p

Well, the drive has been running for hours straight. I've scanned it about three times over and I don't see any problems with it...though I still have to do a full check disc with XP and use SeaTools full diagnostic as well.

Anyway, this drive seems to run a LOT cooler compared to my 320GB Seagate that I bought about six months ago. We'll see how the 320GB does w/ my new enclosure (with a fan) that I ordered.
