This is not another of the same thread already going. i was going to reply on it but it seems more ssd focused.

This is just for regualar hard drives. i want to know the best available hard drives 500gb+ and sata 2/3 at both speeds of 5400rpm & 7200rpm.
but also take into consideration is heat as i dont want it too hot or too loud for the performance, but i certainly do not want to keep a small 250gb for sure.
so looking for a good medium really.

i was looking at the scorpio blacn/blue but also wondered what hitachi and co had to offer to. but right now im not clued up so help woruld be appreciated.
might help others intending to upgrade too.

Have you considered the 500GB Seagate Momentus XT? It's basically a hybrid 500GB 7200rmp HDD and 4GB SSD along with a 32MB cache. It's somewhat faster than your conventional 7200rmp 2.5" HDD.

Hers a link to the product:

I've moved this topic to the general Hardware subforum, as the question is not specific to the X120e. HDDs will not saturate the SATA II bandwidth, so it doesn't really matter whether or not the X120e has SATA III or not.

thianks for input guys. i infact have been looking at the hybrid drives AFTER i wrote this but never really understood how they worked but i can see they are a deal quicker than the fasted 7200rpm drives.
do you think they will be having an upgrade to the hybrid drives anytime soon?

What types of activities do you do on your system? If you are consistently running the same programs each time you boot, a hybrid drive would be an ideal choice. If you're doing a variety of different tasks, you won't see any benefit as the drive as to constantly "re-learn" your usage patterns.

As stated, if you do constant reboots and utilize the same programs over and over get the MomentusXT. From personal experience, I found the MomentusXT quite disappointing. If you want pure speed, a SSD is the way to go. If you want a better value, just get a WD Scorpio Black 500 GB.

see this is it. i am not sure. so you saying that with the xt drive it will remember whats done on the hard drive most and pushes the those things to the top of the list making them snapier when loading apps/booting etc?

also i do not want the drive to be much hotter than a 5400rpm drive so the netbook has to be noisier to cool it down
ill be playing a few simulation apps like football manager.
lots of music and movies and internet.
so what would be best on these basis?

If this is what you'll be doing, then the XT is not what you want. How much storage do you anticipate needing? Would you be streaming movies and music or watching/listening to files locally? If you're going to be using 200 GB or less, an SSD would be the best choice. You can get 512 GB SSDs, but they cost in excess of $1,000. If you need more, a Western Digital Caviar Black 500-750 GB or a Hitachi Travelstar 7K500 would be best. Modern 7200 RPM notebook drives are well engineered enough to where they run at about the same temperature or just ever-so-slightly warmer than a 5400 one.

yea i need around 500-750gb really. no more than. but things will be downloaded rather than streaming so would you recommend the hybrid drive or regular hard drive.
    Thanks
