My X9100 multiplier keeps fluctuating between 6 and 11.5
I have no BIOS options to lock it down, I can only OC it x1 or x2.
I watch the multiplier change in CoreTemp and CPU-Z

I'd really like it to stop. I set power options to max/high but it didn't help.

My T9300 and T9400 don't do this, why is the X9100 doing it?

Sounds like the CxE Low Power States are being used. You can disable them in RMClock if you want to.

Load the cores using Orthos, and check CPU-Z. The multiplier will remain at the highest - 11.5x or whatever. Its probably EIST kicking in. You could try out NHC if you have Vista/XP 32.
Also checkout CrystalCPUID, as it has options to set the multiplier and voltages.

Are these fluctuating when you need processing power? Or are monitoring doing nothing and emotionally you would feel better if you had all with what 3.066Ghz?

I ask because the 45w TDP does count on speed step and if you insist on disabling your heat production could exceed the dissipation capabilities of your cooling solution?

Am I missing something? You will not get better performance by forcing upclock. So I must ask what is the point? You will stress the CPU for no reason. Are you aware of this and still want to do?

    If so go for it!

When your system fries in a year please do not post back asking why. I feel I have already explained.

PP is right. Basically EIST decreases the frequency, throttle and voltage, when the CPU is not under load. Monitor your task manager, there could be some background processes/services that could be troubling the CPU, but you really don't need to worry about the fluctuation. Give undervolting a try using NHC.

I have Vista 64 but I'll try CrystalCPUID, thanks for the tip.

I said multiplier because that is what changes in CoreTemp.
I can watch it flash between 6 and 11.5 or 6 and 13

Thanks for the reply, it was helpful if not harsh.

I suppose it is partly emotional in that I'd feel better if it stated 3.06GHz all the time but I have several notebooks and this is the only one that this is happening. My HP's with a T9300 and T9400 are not exhibiting this behavior.

Is it limited to the extreme edition?

I can't help but wonder if this is also playing a part in my low 3DMark06 scores.

Zenica, it's normal for it to bounce.. it only provides the amount of pep that your computer needs as it needs it. Any type of load will make the CPU up-throttle to running full speed, and when the load drops so does the CPU speed. I'd never lock my multiplier at full throttle, this thing would melt the keyboard if I did. Maybe you should look into new video drivers? Google 177.85 Xfastest, and download it.. make sure it's the xfastest version, and the website is likely japanese :)

When the multiplier changes, only then the frequency, throttle and voltage change. :p

The fluctuation is totally normal, and you can stress the CPU cores, and watch the multiplier stay at 11.5x.

Or I can mail you a small power virus, which will run in the background stressing the CPU to 100%, and the multiplier will stay at max, giving you a frequency of 3.06GHz 'all the time'. :D

Thanks...such a kind offer but with the way my wife sprays Lysol, the poor virus wouldn't stand a chance.
