So I have been thinking about picking up an xbox 360 controller to play a few games on my laptop. But I noticed to download the drivers you need to validate your copy of Windows 7. Let's say I knew someone who didn't have a legit copy of W7. Would he be able to use the 360 controller on his laptop?

Uhh not to sure about drivers, but I plugged up the 360 controller USB cable to my Vista and now my Windows 7 machines, I didn't need drivers.

I am using a wired 360 controller on my notebook, once you plug in the controller the first time it will be detected and the notebook will start looking for a driver, it only takes around 3-5 seconds and no apparent download was made.
I have been playing Crysis 1 and 2, and they both support the xbox 360 controller. -

You don't need the drivers, as far as I know.

I do remember being offered and update to the gamepad software if windows does an update serarch and you have the gamepad connected, but the gamepad works fine without it.

No drivers are needed so "your friend" would be fine would be able to plug-n-play.

I tried but it gave my a message saying that device wasn't recognized.
-
I'm sure your friend would be able to find the drivers elsewhere, or even find better ones.

it will auto download them if it doesn't already have them if you have vista or 7, if you have xp i think i successfully had it auto find them on line, if not i'm sure they can be downloaded for xp.

I've never heard anything about Windows having to be activated for those drivers... learn something new everyday or misguided information?

The drivers for the Xbox 360 Controller are included in the Accessories Software package from Microsoft. Use this if the controller is not initially recognized by Windows.
Make sure the controller is not connected when the installer begins; only connect when it tells you to.

I have used my wired x360 controllers on several different machines, none requiring me to download any drivers whatsoever. If, for some obscure reason, you do need a driver and you can't obtain it from the official site, I'm sure you can get if from some 3rd party source.
