Although 4GB is not recognized by XP 32 bit, is any any harm to put 4GB on an XP 32 bit? I read that some people get BSOD using 4GB, is that the case?

Not the case, the only harm is you losing out on 500mb of ram

It's possible but rare enough that you don't need to worry.

you can run XP 32-bit regardless of how much memory your system has.

it will only recognize up to ~3GB... but you will not notice anything negative.

I am testing XP 32-bit in a notebook now that has 6GB... no issues at all... stil very fast for an aging OS. :)

As long as your computer's hardware supports 4GB of RAM, then it would be fine.

How do I know whether the hardware supports 4gb or not?

Simple way is to look for memory replacement and read the maximum ram allowed.

    cheers ...

Not sure I understand this: isn't it determined by the machine, not the ram card itself? Then why look or "memory replacement"?

It is determined by the motherboard of the laptop. I'm guessing he means to look at the owners manual to see what the maximum memory supported is.

the motherboard is what will determine how much memory it can handle and recognize.

...this is all low level ... not even talking about the Operating System either.

which notebook do you have?... would you know the chipset on it?

Use CPU-Z to get the chipset information. Most mainstream laptops in the past few years can support 4GB. Whether you can use all of it, is a totally different issue.

Three machines (friend's and mine), probably all support 4gb according to the comments here: Thinkpads t61, x61s and x200s. Answer is yes?
