I'm thinking of redoing my laptop, it originally came with XP home on recovery discs with all the files and drivers specifically for my Acer laptop. I recently redid my home PC and installed XP pro (retail version I got). I would like to install XP pro on my laptop. Should I do this even though the pro version isn't specifically designed for the laptop like the home edition is?
A friend of mine mentioned that this isn't a good idea. Basically when I reformat the HD on the laptop and install XP pro it'll install a lot of unnecessary files and drivers that my laptop doesn't need and it could cause a problem with the operation of the laptop. Right now it works fine and doesn't give me problems. I would like it to be the same if I install XP pro, what are your thoughts??? TIA.

It's often best to check with the manufacturer of your notebook if installing XP Pro is supported/recommended. Also make sure that you have disks for all necessary drivers you might need to reinstall on the laptop after wiping it out. I know that with certain EMachines laptops people had a number of issues upgrading to XP Pro to the point it just wasn't worth it and EMachines support wouldn't help out with such issues.

Well, it's done and I am very happy with it now that Pro is installed. It seems to boot up faster and it works like a charm. All the acer drivers were installed from the disc without trouble. The only thing I have to figure out is that the onscreen display when you use a function key doesn't show up, like if I raise the volume using Fn+ up or down it doesn't display on the screen which kinda sucks in a way. I could always adjust it via the speaker icon though so I'll see if I can get that feature back. Other than that it works great!!!!! [
