Hi everyone, I hope I am in the correct forum area.
    I have just purchased a new Dell xps 17 L702x.The so said specs are;
    Processor: Intel i5-2410M (2.3Ghz, Quad-Core, 3MB cache)

Memory: 4 GB DDR3 SDRAM Upgradable to 16 GB

Graphics & Video: 17.3" HD+ WLED TL (1600x900) Display with multi touchscreen, nVIDIA GeForce GT 555M With Optimus

Untill it arrives end of next week & I run SIW or SiSoft Sandra, this is what I am lead to believe.
My question is, which would be the best processor upgrade? taking into account; cost / performance / reliability factors
Intel Core i5-2410M Mobile processor (FF8062700845205)

This laptop will be sitting on top of a Zalman ZM-NC3000U Ultimate 17 inch for better cooling.
The obvious mod's such as SSD & RAM are no brainers.

Any information, guidence & straight up and down facts will be very much appreciated, as I am as green as grass in this area.

Its not possible for us to take into account cost / performance / reliability factors and tell you 1 processor that is the absolute best without knowing more details. A i7-2630qm would be a good performance boost though.

Not sure if you're interested in upgrading the display, not sure if its possible either, I think even if the touch panel is in a separate piece it will be a PITA because you'll have to deal with dirt and dust getting underneath it.

    niffcreature.

Thanks for the reply, this was the processor I was looking at on the CPU Database.... Intel Core i5-3360M (PGA) Mobile processor

As I am as green as grass in this area, I do not want to make any "FATAL ERRORS"
Excuse my lack of knowledge (we all have to learn at some stage) is this a G2 Sandy Bridge Socket. I ask because when I look at the CPU World data it becomes confusing to me. Intel Core i7-2630QM Mobile processor (FF8062700837005)
A far as the display, I am not interested I upgrading or changing so it's not an issue to me, yet any way.

    Again thanks for the advice.

you can only upgrade to SB cpus, thus the one that niff pointed out is a good value and good performer

aside the screen, cpu, ram and HDD change, there is nothing more that you can do, well you can add some copper here and there, but its not needed

On CPU World it talks indicates identical processors, although one is PGA the other is BGA ???? does any one know what this means.

Additionally with a 10 watt increase, would it be advisable to get a better fan for cooling purposes?? again thanks for he advice.

AFAIK the cooling solution is the same for both the quads and dual cores in that model.

PGA is the one to get.

Thanks Mr MM, I have just had a look at this cpu and its a much better performer than my i5. I have pulled my Toshiba P205 to the mother board to no avail as far as updating, but I did get to see the workings. Therefore I fore see no real issues with upgrading this particular cpu.

    According to Passmark i7-2630qm rated 6344 & ranked 87 verses my i5-2410M @ 3361:260 respectively

My Toshiba is a 3 legged donkey, but it has done the job for the past 4yrs.

    AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile TL-60
    L1 Instructions Cache 2 x 64 KBytes
    L2 Cache 2 x 512 KBytes

Passmark ratings: 996:783, as you can see in comparison to; i5 / i7 cpu it is a retarded house brick lol
Thanks for the input it is very much appreciated.
