    hi,
I have a Dell XPS M1210 notebook with 2x512MB DDR2 533MHz Memory. Now i wants to upgrade my memory but there is a lot of confusion in what module i should buy.
After going through several sites i have came up with a few options and understanding them is so far above my knowledge.
There are 533MHz and 667MHz available ... i do not know which one should i use .
There is also question of dual channel and shared channel ... where i am totally lost.
i mean i want to share more memory with my VGA which is currently just 64MB but how.
Also should i buy a pair of same Speed 533MHz or 667MHz(2x2GB) or a single 2GB will do ?
Please can anyone guide me through this ?

    Welcome to notebook review,
The XPS1210 uses DDR2 sodimm memory.
The system can both use PC4200 and PC5300.
If you have a processor with a 667MHz FSB, it is best to pair it with PC5300 memory running at 667MHz speed.

All memory needs to conform to JEDEC standards, so PC6400, PC5300 and PC4200 will work in your laptop.
You can upgrade to 4Gb of memory.
In order to get dual channel, you need to use two matched cards, so buying a 2 x 2Gb kit will give you 4gb in dual channel.
You should strive for dual channel especially on your system since it has an onboard graphics card. Integrated solutions run best when the memory they borrow from the system is in dual channel

This kit will be perfect for your system:

First of all Thanks a lot for such helpful and quick response.
You did explain me in the way i was able to understand most of it but i have two more questions if possible?

I have nvidia 7400 in my M1210 which is currently showing 64MB , so would it make any difference if i do not buy identical memory modules, if i wants to share memory with my graphics card.

and second for Dual channel , both memory modules should be of the same speed (533MHz/667MHZ) or same capacity (1GB/2GB) ?

check the ram speed and than try to purchase the new ram with the comparability of the old ram.

you can add the ram upto 2 Gb or more but it depends upon your requirement.
