    Hi,
I'm planning on order a XPS M1530, but to save money, I would like to upgrade the ram myself with the ram avaliable from newegg. The XPS M1530 I am likely going to buy will originally have 2x1GB ram sticks. I would like to stick them into an old Inspiron 6000 machine. Will it work since the ram inside XPS M1530 is PC2 5300 whereas the Inspiron is 4200. I don't mind if the ram is downclocked :) .

Yep, the RAM from the M1530 will work in the 6000.

Yeah, it will work just fine as @dtwn83 stated, at 533MHz (PC2-4200)....
