I bought a Dell XPS M1710 in Feb 2007 with T7400 2.16GHz, 2.0 GB RAM, Go 7950GTX yadda yadda yadda....and 100 GB memory. Schoolboy error I know, but the cut and short of it is after Vista, about 3 decent games and a load of pics & music im on about 5 GB and losing it day by day.

I know my O.S is on a partition on the current HD, but is there room in the chassis to slot another HD in? I dont want to go external as i move it about alot and i really dont want to have to go down the route of installing a ne HD and moving all my stuff over.

help please, what are my options?

    regards,

    Chris

The XPS1710 only supports one harddrive. The only way you can have two, is if you removed your optical drive and bought an optical drive bay to hdd bay.

2low4u, please go into my computer, and right click the harddrive. Then go to Properties.
Then click on disc cleanup. It takes a bout a minute, and once it scans, a new window will appear. Check everything in the box, and remove all of the temporary files, this will clear up a few gb of space on the drive.
Once that is finished, run the disc cleanup again. This time go into the "more options" tab.
Then click on the system restore "cleanup" then it takes a minute, then hit apply then okay.
You will see that this will free up 10-30gb of harddrive space. Vista caches itself all of the time, so this is safe to do, and is recommended to do once a week or so.
Then after this is done, I would let it defragment for an hour or two, and that will help speed up the system

There are other ways of increasing space... I for example bought my laptop with an 80gb internal and upgraded to a 200gb internal.

There are programs out there that will copy all of your data (exactly) to an external hard drive (if you get a 2.5" external enclosure) and then you can just swap the HDDs and then have more internal space. Plus, that way you'll then have a 100gb external hard drive left over.

I like the suggestion above very much. I like it because you can get a 320GB for under $150 and then other than the cost of enclosure end up with a 100GB external.

I would like to be the first to say you are competent enough to do. The fact you are even posting and reading shows me that. If any members disagree feel free to chime in. As to what application should be used? That is a different question and maybe a different post. And once you find it and are ready to proceed, maybe repost (new thread) your concerns. You really are capable of doing this. It comes down to having the correct hardware and application, clicking a couple of buttons. On the physical aspect, if you can use a screw driver and ever played with LEGOS you should be fine. This forum is the best free Tech support and dare I say better than some paid. :)
