Hi, guys. Just asking that how i should upgrade my XPS M1710, right now i'm having a T7200 and a Go7900GS and 1GB of ram. The CPu, and Graphics Card is fine for me but i need more Ram. So is there any recommendation on how i should upgrade my ram. In the document of this laptop, it sas that the M1710 is using Mobile Intel 945PM Express which will not recognize more than 3GB of ram, So if i put 4gB in how much it will recognize. Is it neccessary to use PC2-6400 800Mhz ram since my friend keeps on saying that it will be much faster with low latency? I mainly use it for Gaming.

If you use 4GB, 32-bit Windows will see ~3.25GB of memory.
2.)No, the best type of memory for your computer will probably be 667MHz--PC5300/PC5400. Your notebook only has a 667MHz FSB, and 800MHz memory doesn't even work in the newer laptops generally.
3.) Check the RAM Deals thread.

    Unless you're using a 64-bit, I wouldn't bother going past 2GB.

I use opensolaris (64bit) and Fedora 8 x86_64 but they only see ~3.3GB.
Looking at the bios configuration it sees 4GB installed with 3327MB available and states:
"Due to amount of memory being assigned for system use, Memory Available is less than Memory Installed.
None of the fields are changeable."
If there is only 2GB installed, all 2GB is available for use.
Does anyone know if it is possible to recover/ remap the lost ~700MB of RAM.

I have 2x2GB, and my chipset only sees 3GB. I'm guessing we have similar chipsets, so I'd say get a 1GB stick and a 2GB stick both running at 667MHz.

To OP, Looked at Intel site here. Kind of ambiguous, as in the RAM part says can address 4GB. where did you read three? That is close to what you will see on a 32bit OS ( I understand the system uses memory addresses but this is vague). I think as said above you may see a little more. You may be limited even if you use 64bit OS. The way it is written not clear. I think 3GB is good but 4GB won't hurt and you might find the info out there is inaccurate. Anyone running 945PM and 64bit OS and more than 3GB RAM?
