I believe one of the recent BIOS updates allows for 8 GB RAM, so if you're going to upgrade make sure you're on the latest BIOS. I've not installed 8 personally, but there were a couple of threads in the XPS forum indicating success.

Of course you'll need to be running a 64-bit OS to utilize that additional RAM. How much did Dell want for it?

Yeah that's pretty salty, especially if you're already on 4 GB. I'm having a hard time seeing the benefit of 8 GB over 4 GB at that price, for my purposes anyway. I have 8 GB on my main desktop but that's used for a lot more stuff than my notebook.

It'd be one thing if you could just add 4 GB to the 4 GB already there, but I'm guessing the existing 4 GB is 2+2, meaning that it'd all have to be dumped to go to 4+4.
